What BTEA pays
On BTEA, you receive:
- Your qualifying social welfare payment — at the same rate you were receiving before returning to education (typically €232/week)
- Annual Cost of Education Allowance — €500 — paid at the start of each academic year to help with course costs
- Possible SUSI maintenance grant — if you qualify (apply separately at susi.ie). SUSI and BTEA can be received at the same time for third-level students.
How to apply for BTEA
-
Check your qualifying period
Confirm with your Intreo Centre that you have been on your qualifying payment for the required period and that your planned course qualifies.
-
Choose an approved course
Your course must be a full-time approved programme at second or third level. Your Intreo Centre can confirm whether your chosen course qualifies. You should have a conditional offer or acceptance letter before applying.
-
Submit form BTEA1 well in advance
Get form BTEA1 from your Intreo Centre or gov.ie. Include proof of your qualifying social welfare payment, your course acceptance letter, and your current qualifications. Apply 2–3 months before the course starts — approval can take weeks.
-
Continue payments during studies
If approved, your social welfare payment continues throughout your course. You must continue to be enrolled and attending full-time — the Department may verify attendance with your college.

How do I apply?
Submit form BTEA1 to your Intreo Centre with proof of your social welfare payment and course acceptance letter. Apply 2–3 months before your course starts — approval is not automatic.
- BTEA is not automatic — you must apply and get approval before your course starts. Approval can take weeks, so apply 2–3 months in advance.
- Part-time courses do not qualify. BTEA is for full-time approved courses only. If your course is part-time, you may still claim Jobseeker's Allowance while you remain available for work.
- The SUSI maintenance grant is entirely separate from BTEA. You must apply for SUSI through susi.ie — it is not included in or triggered by your BTEA approval.
- Your payment does not automatically stop if you drop out — but you are required to notify the Department, and overpayments will be recovered. The Department may verify attendance with your college.
- Time spent on Illness Benefit, Maternity Benefit, or in hospital can often count towards the qualifying period. Ask your Intreo Centre — many people miss this.
- Approval is not guaranteed — the Department assesses your course, your qualifications, and whether BTEA represents a genuine route to employment for you.
