Our mission
IrishBenefits.ie exists to make Irish social welfare information accessible to everyone. The Irish benefits system is complex, frequently updated and poorly explained in official documentation. We publish clear, plain-English guides that explain eligibility rules, current payment rates and how to apply — without bureaucratic language, legal jargon or unnecessary complexity.
We pay particular attention to people who are new to Ireland or unfamiliar with the system — including workers on employment permits, EU nationals, non-EU residents and their families — because the rules around immigration status and the Habitual Residence Condition are among the most misunderstood aspects of Irish welfare.
What we cover
- Social welfare payments — Jobseeker's, Maternity Benefit, Child Benefit, State Pension and over 40 others
- Department of Social Protection schemes — Community Employment, Back to Work, education allowances
- PRSI — contribution classes, records, how contributions affect entitlements
- PPS Numbers — how to apply, what they are used for, requirements by immigration status
- Benefits for immigrants — Habitual Residence Condition, Stamp types, entitlements by permission category
- Tax credits — Personal, Employee and Earned Income credits, how to claim
- Employment rights connected to welfare — redundancy pay, occupational injury, maternity leave
We do not cover mortgage products, private insurance, private pension schemes or investment products.
Editorial standards
Every guide published on IrishBenefits.ie follows these principles:
- Accuracy first. Payment rates, eligibility rules and application procedures are verified against official government sources before publication.
- Transparency about limitations. Where rules are complex or vary by individual circumstances, we say so clearly and direct readers to official sources.
- No clickbait or sensationalism. We describe benefits factually, without exaggerating entitlements or creating false urgency.
- Clear dates. Every guide displays the date it was last reviewed so readers can judge how current it is.
- Corrections welcomed. If a reader identifies an error, we investigate and correct it promptly. See our Editorial Policy for full details.
Who reviews our content
Content published on IrishBenefits.ie is written, reviewed and verified by Vitor Alves before publication. The review process includes:
- Verification against official sources — all payment rates, eligibility rules and application procedures are cross-checked against gov.ie, citizensinformation.ie, revenue.ie and official Budget documents before any guide is published or updated.
- Annual Budget review — following each October Budget announcement, all affected guides are reviewed and updated to reflect the new rates taking effect in January.
- Mid-year checks — significant legislative or regulatory changes between Budgets are reviewed within 30 days of announcement.
- Corrections SLA — if a reader reports an error, the relevant guide is reviewed within 24 hours and corrected within 48 hours if the error is confirmed.
- Non-government perspective — content is reviewed from the perspective of someone navigating the Irish system as an immigrant or self-employed person, not just from a regulatory compliance standpoint. This ensures explanations are practical, not just technically accurate.
For questions about content accuracy or to report an error, email irishbenefits@gmail.com. See our Editorial Policy for full details.

Update policy
Irish social welfare rates and eligibility rules change regularly. Our update schedule:
- Annual Budget review — every October/November following the Budget announcement, we update all affected payment rates and eligibility rules to reflect the following January's changes.
- Mid-year legislative changes — when significant rule changes are announced between Budgets, we update the affected guides immediately.
- Reader-reported corrections — verified errors are corrected within 48 hours of confirmation.
The "Last updated" date shown on each page reflects the most recent review of that specific page, not just the date it was first published.
