How the glasses contribution works
After your free eye test, if the optician issues a prescription, you can claim the lens contribution. Here is how it applies:

Many opticians offer basic frame and lens packages at or below the scheme contribution rate — meaning you pay nothing. Premium frames, designer brands, and specialist lens coatings incur a top-up charge.

If you pay any top-up costs above the Optical Benefit scheme contribution, those excess costs qualify for Medical Expenses Tax Relief at 20% through Revenue myAccount. Keep your receipts.

Frequently asked questions
My prescription changed — can I get new glasses before 2 years?
The 2-year cycle is the minimum interval. If your prescription changes significantly before the 2-year period is up, you can have a new examination and claim the contribution again — but only if the 2-year cycle from your previous claim has passed. If not, you would pay privately for the new glasses.
Can I have the eye examination at any optician and buy glasses elsewhere?
The free examination and the glasses contribution must both happen at a participating scheme optician. You cannot have the exam at one place and claim the contribution at another. The optician who examines you processes the claim directly.
My employer pays for private health insurance — does this affect Optical Benefit?
No. Optical Benefit is a PRSI-based entitlement entirely separate from private health insurance. Having private insurance does not reduce or eliminate your Optical Benefit entitlement. You can use both — your PRSI benefit for the free exam, and your private insurance top-up for frames.
I just moved to Ireland — when do I become eligible?
You become eligible after 39 weeks of PRSI contributions paid since starting work in Ireland. For most new workers in full-time employment (52 weeks per year), this is achieved in approximately 9 months. Use mywelfare.ie to track your contributions.
Is there a separate children's optical scheme?
Yes. Children under 16 (and those under 19 in full-time education) are entitled to free eye examinations through the HSE and subsidised glasses through the Medical Card or GP Visit Card scheme. Optical Benefit is for adult PRSI workers.
Can I claim Optical Benefit and the Dental Benefit in the same year?
Yes. Optical Benefit (every 2 years) and Dental Benefit (every year) are independent entitlements. You can use both in the same calendar year for their respective services.
