Maternity Benefit — PRSI qualification rules in full

Maternity Benefit is paid directly by DSP, not through your employer. To qualify, you must meet one of the following:

  • Option A: 39 PRSI contributions paid or credited in the 12 months before your first day of maternity leave
  • Option B: 39 PRSI contributions paid in the last complete tax year and 39 paid in the year before that

You must also be in insurable employment up to the first day of maternity leave (or registered as self-employed). Your employer must confirm your maternity leave dates to DSP as part of the application.

No Habitual Residence Condition on Maternity Benefit. If you have worked in Ireland and paid the required PRSI regardless of nationality or visa type, you are entitled to claim. Stamp 1, 2, 4 or any other stamp does not disqualify you — only the PRSI record matters.

Parent’s Benefit — 9 extra weeks for each parent

  • €299/week — same rate as Maternity Benefit
  • 9 weeks per parent, available to both parents independently
  • Must be taken within the first 2 years of birth or adoption
  • Can be taken as one block or split into separate weeks
  • Applies to births, adoptions and surrogacy arrangements equally

Free GP care during pregnancy

  • At least 6 free antenatal GP visits and 2 free postnatal visits
  • All public hospital maternity care — no charges as a public patient
  • Free public health nurse visits after birth
  • Routine blood tests and ultrasounds covered as a public patient
  • Available to all women resident in Ireland — no nationality or visa restriction

If you do not qualify for Maternity Benefit

  • Supplementary Welfare Allowance — €240/week, means-tested; contact your local Community Welfare Service
  • Employer maternity pay — some contracts top up beyond the DSP rate; check your employment contract or ask HR
  • Annual leave — you can use accrued annual leave to top up income during any part of your maternity leave period
  • Health and Safety Benefit — if you cannot continue working due to pregnancy risk and are placed on protective leave by your employer, this may apply

If you were recently employed and are still short of the 39-contribution threshold, contact your Intreo Centre — you may have credited contributions (from periods on social welfare or certain other circumstances) that count toward the total.

Frequently asked questions

What is Maternity Benefit in Ireland in 2026?

299 euro per week for 26 weeks, paid by DSP directly to you. Available to PAYE employees and self-employed women with the required PRSI contributions. Apply at least 6 weeks before your leave starts (12 weeks if self-employed).

Is there free GP care during pregnancy in Ireland?

Yes. The Maternity and Infant Care Scheme provides at least 6 free antenatal GP visits and 2 free postnatal visits. Public hospital maternity care is also free. Available to all women resident in Ireland.

How much is Child Benefit in Ireland in 2026?

140 euro per month per child. Universal — no means test, no PRSI required. Starts from the month after birth. Apply using form CB1 within 3 months of birth.

What is Parent's Benefit?

299 euro per week for 9 weeks per parent, separately claimable by both parents in the first 2 years of birth or adoption. Same PRSI requirement as Maternity Benefit.

Can I get Maternity Benefit if I don't have enough PRSI?

If your PRSI record falls short, options include Supplementary Welfare Allowance (240 euro per week, means-tested), employer contractual maternity pay, or using annual leave. Contact your Intreo Centre — you may have credited contributions that help.

Can immigrants claim Maternity Benefit?

Yes. There is no Habitual Residence Condition on Maternity Benefit. If you have the required PRSI record from employment in Ireland, you can claim regardless of your nationality or visa stamp.

What is the Child Support Payment?

58 euro per month for children under 12 and 78 euro per month for children aged 12 and over, paid to families receiving a qualifying social welfare payment. It replaced the Qualified Child Increase system in 2024.

How do I apply for Maternity Benefit?

Complete form MB10 (available at gov.ie or your Intreo Centre). Your employer must also complete part of the form to confirm your maternity leave dates. Submit at least 6 weeks before your leave starts. Self-employed women submit form MB12 at least 12 weeks in advance.

Common misunderstandings about pregnancy benefits in Ireland
  • Maternity Benefit is not paid by your employer — it comes from the Department of Social Protection. Some employers top up, but the base payment is always from DSP.
  • There is no Habitual Residence Condition on Maternity Benefit — immigrants qualify on PRSI alone.
  • Child Benefit is universal and not means-tested — income, savings, or partner's earnings do not affect it.
  • Parent's Benefit is separate from Paternity Benefit — both parents can claim both independently.
  • Free GP care during pregnancy applies to all women resident in Ireland, not just citizens or PRSI contributors.
  • If you are short of 39 PRSI contributions, credited contributions from social welfare periods may close the gap — always check before assuming you don't qualify.
