Who qualifies for the Widow's Contributory Pension?
Widowed people or surviving civil partners who are not cohabiting, where either they or their late spouse has at least 260 paid PRSI contributions and satisfies the averaging conditions. No means test.
What PRSI contributions are needed?
260 paid contributions and an average of 39 per year from first employment to the year before death, OR an average of 24 per year over the full working life. The contributions can be yours or your late spouse's.
Is the Widow's Pension means-tested?

Can I work while receiving the Widow's Pension?
Yes, with no restriction for the Contributory pension. You can work full-time and receive the full pension. The Non-Contributory version assesses income as means.
What happens when I reach 66?
The pension continues at the higher over-66 rate (€275.30/week in 2026). The transfer is automatic — you do not need to apply for the State Pension separately.
How do I apply?
Use form WCP1 (Contributory) or WCPNC1 (Non-Contributory) as soon as possible after the death. Bring the death certificate, marriage certificate, and both PPS numbers.
- The PRSI contributions can be your late spouse's — even if you never worked or paid PRSI yourself, you can qualify through their contribution record.
- The Contributory Widow's Pension is not means-tested — income, savings and full-time employment do not affect the payment amount.
- The pension is not backdated more than 6 months — apply as soon as possible after the death, not months later when affairs are settled.
- Remarrying or starting to cohabit stops the payment — both the Contributory and Non-Contributory versions cease if you enter a new relationship.
- At age 66, the pension does not disappear — it automatically switches to the higher over-66 rate. No new application is needed.
